QuizBolt is a trivia game made by Prashant Vaibhav, an independent developer in Germany. This page explains what QuizBolt keeps about you, why, who helps run it, and how to delete it. It covers the iPhone and iPad app, the game at app.playquizbolt.com, and the website at www.playquizbolt.com.
The short version
- We keep what the game needs to work: your account, your rounds and your scores.
- No ads. No tracking across other apps or websites. We never sell your data.
- Other players see your username, picture and scores. They never see your email.
- You can delete your account, and everything in it, any time from You › Account.
Who’s responsible
Prashant Vaibhav, in Germany, is responsible for your data under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For questions, requests or worries, email [email protected].
What we keep
When you play as a guest
You can play without an account. When you start your first round, we give your browser or device a random guest ID and keep your rounds under it. A guest ID isn’t connected to your name or email.
When you create an account
- Email and password. We keep your email address to sign you in and to send account emails, like confirming your address or resetting your password. Your password is stored scrambled, so nobody can read it, us included.
- Sign in with Apple. Apple gives us an ID that stands for your Apple account, plus an email address. If you choose Hide My Email, that’s a private address that forwards to you. Apple may offer to share your name too. QuizBolt doesn’t use it.
- Your username. You choose it, and other players see it.
If you were playing as a guest, your guest rounds move into your new account.
Your profile picture
A picture is optional. You can pick one of our illustrated portraits or upload a photo. When you upload a photo, we save a fresh copy of it, which drops hidden details such as where and with which camera it was taken. An outside service, PicPurify, then checks automatically that it isn’t sexually explicit. If it passes, we store it along with a small thumbnail. When you change or remove your photo, we delete the old files. If you think the check turned down your photo by mistake, email us.
Your games
To run your rounds, score them fairly and show your progress, we keep:
- the topics you play, the questions you were shown and the answers you picked
- when each question appeared and when you answered it. Our servers time every answer, because speed counts toward your score.
- your scores, topic ratings, leaderboard places and crowns
- the challenges you send, and the rounds you play from friends’ challenges
- when you last opened Compete, so we can show you what’s new since then
Reports
If you report a player, we keep your report, including who sent it and who it’s about, so we can look into it.
Emails you send us
If you write to us, we keep your message and email address for as long as we need them to help you.
On your device
QuizBolt stores a few things in your browser or in the app: your sign-in, so you stay signed in, and small reminders, like a round you’re partway through or which challenge replies you’ve already seen. The game needs these to work. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
What other people can see
- Other players can see your username, picture, topic ratings, crowns and leaderboard places.
- When you send a challenge, anyone with the link can see your username, picture, topic and score. Chat apps may show a preview card with your name and picture.
- When you play a friend’s challenge, they see your username and score.
- Your email address is never shown to other players.
Who helps us run QuizBolt
A few companies handle data for us. They may only use it to provide their service to QuizBolt.
- Supabase runs our database, sign-in and file storage, and sends our account emails. Our database is in Frankfurt, Germany. Supabase, Inc. is based in the US.
- PicPurify (Ars Nova Systems SAS, Nantes, France) checks uploaded photos. It receives only the photo, not your name or email, and its terms say the photo is deleted once it’s been checked.
- Cloudflare delivers our websites and protects them from attacks. Your visits to our websites, including your IP address, pass through it.
- Our own web server serves the website and the web version of the game.
Apple is involved in two more ways, under Apple’s own privacy policy. If you use Sign in with Apple, Apple confirms who you are. If you installed the app from the App Store, Apple may share anonymous app statistics with us, but only if you allowed sharing with app developers in your device settings.
Supabase and Cloudflare are US companies, and PicPurify may process photos in the US as well as in Europe. When your data may leave the EU, we rely on the safeguards the GDPR requires, such as the EU’s Standard Contractual Clauses in these companies’ data processing terms.
Server logs
Like any website, our servers see your IP address and some browser details when you visit.
- Our web server logs page visits: the time, what kind of page it was, whether it loaded, your IP address, your browser type, and the name of the website that sent you. It never records a page’s full address, so challenge links stay private. We keep this log for at most seven days. A script counts visitors per hour from it, and only those counts are kept.
- Supabase and Cloudflare keep their own short-term technical logs, such as the time and IP address of requests, for security and troubleshooting.
Why we use it
The GDPR asks us to name a legal reason for each use of your data.
- To run the game and your account, including your picture and your games. It’s needed to give you QuizBolt (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
- To keep QuizBolt safe and working: checking photos, looking into reports, stopping abuse and fixing problems. That’s our legitimate interest in a safe game that works (Article 6(1)(f)).
- To see how QuizBolt is doing. The developer looks at totals, like how many rounds were played, how many new players came back and how many people visited. These come from game records and visit counts. They’re never shared, and we don’t build a profile of you. That’s our legitimate interest in improving the game (Article 6(1)(f)).
- To answer your emails, as part of giving you QuizBolt or in our legitimate interest in helping you (Article 6(1)(b) and (f)).
- When the law requires it, for example to answer a lawful request from the authorities (Article 6(1)(c)).
You don’t need an account to play. To create one, we need an email address or your Apple ID. Without either, you can keep playing as a guest.
How long we keep it
- Your account and games: for as long as you have your account.
- Guest rounds: we keep them so your results and any challenges you shared keep working. If you’d like yours removed, email us.
- Page-visit logs: up to seven days. The hourly counts made from them don’t identify anyone.
- Backups: Supabase keeps routine database backups for a short time. Deleted data disappears from them as older backups are replaced.
Deleting your account
Open You › Account in the app or on the website, choose Delete account, and type “delete” to confirm. If you use Sign in with Apple, Apple asks you to confirm it’s you, and we ask Apple to cancel QuizBolt’s access to your Apple ID.
Deleting your account removes, straight away and for good:
- your email, sign-in details, username and picture
- your rounds, answers, scores, ratings and crowns
- the challenges you sent, and the rounds you played from friends’ challenges
You drop off the leaderboards immediately, and your photo files are removed from storage shortly afterwards. Friends who played your challenges keep their own rounds and scores, but those rounds are no longer linked to you or your challenge, and your challenge links stop working. Chat apps may still keep a preview card they already showed.
Can’t sign in any more? Email us from your account’s email address and we’ll help.
Your rights
Under the GDPR, you can:
- ask what data we have about you and get a copy, including in a format you can take elsewhere
- correct it. You can change your username and picture yourself under You.
- have it deleted. You can delete your account yourself, as described above.
- ask us to limit how we use it, or object to uses based on our legitimate interests
- complain to a data protection authority, in particular in the EU country where you live or work
To use any of these rights, email [email protected]. We’ll reply within one month.
Children
QuizBolt isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal data from them. If you think a child under 13 has given us personal data, email us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
If we change how we handle your data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
